Semantic Frottage - JGomula

Semantic Frottage - JGomula Tube. Duration : 1.32 Mins.

In art, frottage (to rub), is a surrealist method of creation developed by Max Ernst. It also refers to a consensual sexual rubbing between partners. In this interactive large scale video installation, sexualized phrases slide, rub, and float across one another in a fashion based upon the physics of the sensually ambient lava lamp. Live video capture turns up the heat a bit more, capturing and setting the gliding phrases on fire. Intertwined with this animation, a blizzard of words float down in an exploration of the wide breadth of slang words associated with sexualized male and female body parts. Juxtaposed against their scientific names, the 1000+ slang words reveal the emotional and subjective nature of the slang, in both positive/nurturing and negative/hateful contexts. A woman lassos and moves within the text, re-appropriating the words for her own use. Audience members may join in the artwork by walking through the installation and adding their images and shadows to the imagery and its live video feed, by adding slang word stickers to the love poems on the wall or by rubbing the slang stickers onto other audience members. Performed as part of the International Surrealism Festival, hosted by the Modesto Art Museum and the Mistlin Gallery in downtown Modesto,CA. March 2009.
